Ancient Asini

An ancient Mycenaean port mentioned in Homer's Iliad

Ancient Asini is located on a small cape, at the end of Tolo beach, next to Kastraki beach and is an important archaeological site dating back to the Neolithic era. At first glance there is not much to see but the museum and digital representation give the visitor an understanding of the role and importance of Ancient Asini. See the ruins and cisterns, the ramparts of the Hellenistic period, the fortification and the underground water storage that was later used by the Italians during World War II. The view of Tolo & Drepano from there is stunning.

Nafplion

One of the most beautiful towns in Greece

Nafplio or Nafplion was the first capital of the newly formed Greek state and its history is evident in its architecture, monuments and castles. Explore the old town, the castle of Palamidi, the fortress of Bourtzi on the sea, the castle of Akronafplia, the museums & beaches. The city is visited by tourists all year round and is worth a visit during your stay in Tolo.

Ancient Tiryns

A Mycenaean era city known for it's megalithic walls

Ancient Tiryns, a fortified city whose walls according to legend were built by Cyclopes, hence the name "cyclopean", a description of the size of the walls, was inhabited since the Neolithic Age and reached its peak in the 13th century BC as the center of the Mycenaean world. Due to its excellent state of preservation, the acropolis is an excellent example of Mycenaean architecture, both palaces and fortifications. See the "cyclopean" walls, the catacombs and the ruins of the city.

Argos

The oldest continually inhabitated city in Europe

The city of ancient Argos was built on two hills: Aspis and Larissa, 80m and 289m high, respectively. Argos, along with Mycenae and Tiryns, was an important center during the Mycenaean era, and the city remained important during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Visit the tombs, the ancient theater with a capacity of 20,000 people, the largest in Greece, and the Sanctuary of Aphrodite.

Ancient Epidaurus

One of the most famous archaeological sites in Greece

The most impressive of the Epidaurus site is the ancient theatre with its incredible acoustics, built in the 4th century BC with a maximum capacity of 15,000 people, it is incredibly well preserved and still hosts performances every July & August. Epidaurus, was a large city in Ancient Greece, flourished as a sacred place dedicated to Apollo, Asclepius and Hygieia. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the ruins of the thermal baths etc. are still visible today.

Ancient Mycenae

Centre of the Mycenaean civilization, that ruled over the Mediterranean

Inhabited since the Neolithic Age, Mycenae evolved into a fortified city ruled by King Agamemnon (among others). One of the most important ancient Greek cities, it is responsible for an entire era and is closely associated with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Today you can see the well-preserved sites such as the Lion Gate, the Palace, the Tomb of Agamemnon, the Tholotic Tombs, the North Gate, temples and sanctuaries.

Ancient Nemea

Famous for the Nemean Lion legend and the Agiorgitiko wine variety

Ancient Nemea, a religious site where Panhellenic games were organized every two years among other Panhellenic sporting events such as the Olympic Games, the Isthmian Games and other festivals such as the Pythia. It is an interesting place with many sights, which also remind us of the first labor of Hercules. Visit the temple of Zeus and the ancient stadium, that is more well-preserved than that of ancient Olympia. The Nemea wineries are also a destination worth visiting for a tour and wine tasting, try local varities like the Agiorgitiko and learn about wine making in Greece.

Ancient Corinth

One of the wealthiest ancient Greek city-states

Situated on the Isthmus of Corinth, Ancient Corinth was an important city in antiquity and during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It is a charming city and its geographical position made it a major commercial center, with a large fleet. It participated in many wars and maintained its prestige even as a Roman colony, for over a millennium it was often at the forefront of developments in the ancient world.

Corinth Canal

The engineering accomplishment that was conceived in antiquity

The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It crosses the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from mainland Greece, and is argued by many to make the Peloponnese an island. It is 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) long and only 21.4 meters (70 feet) wide at its base. Cross the canal by boat.

Ancient Sparta

The most impressive military city-state in ancient Greece

Sparta was one of the most famous city-states of the ancient world and influenced its culture even to the modern language, in English the word "Spartan" is used to denote simplicity/austerity and rigor. There were no large buildings in Sparta but its museums are worth a visit and the ancient theater with its impressive view, the Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia and the archaeological site which is said to be the tomb of the Spartan King Leonidas.

Byzantine Mystras

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Mystras is one of the most fascinating historical sites the Peloponnese has to offer - at the steep foothills of Taygetos. A remarkably well-preserved Byzantine city, once home to 20,000 people, with winding streets passing through magnificent gates, medieval houses and palaces and encountering numerous Byzantine churches. The frescoes found here have been studied worldwide and are magnificent examples of Byzantine art.

Ancient Olympia

UNESCO World Heritage Site and Birthplace of the Olympic Games

Olympia was a place dedicated to the worship of the god Zeus, in whose honor panhellenic games were held every four years from 776 BC to 393 AD, from here the modern Olympic Games originated. Today one can see ruins spread over a large area, the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera, training areas, baths/baths and houses. The Archaeological Museum has exhibits from the archaeological site including the healing statue of Hermes. The stadium is just a few minutes from the archaeological site.
